Monolayer & Surface-Printed Films

Not every application benefits from a laminate. Surface-printed PE and other monolayer films can be an effective solution when the product, print durability, distribution and sealing conditions support them.

PROJECT FOCUSA simpler structure can be the technically better answer.

What the specification must resolve

What to confirm before production.

Surface-printed PE and other non-laminated films can provide the required toughness, opacity, sealing and economics when print durability and barrier needs support them. Scuff resistance and ink protection should be evaluated in the real distribution environment.

Key considerations
  • Scuff and print protection
  • Opacity and color holdout
  • Seal and shrink response
  • Gauge and stiffness
Common applications
  • Frozen foods
  • Ice cream novelties
  • Bundling
  • General overwrap

Where projects go off track

Confirm these details early.

01

Defaulting to a laminate without defining the missing function

02

Under-testing print scuff and blocking

03

Changing gauge without checking stiffness, seal and machine handling

01Product, fill and performance target
02Filling line, dimensions and material inputs
03Samples, trials, graphics and final approval

A common question

When is surface-printed PE a good fit?

It can suit frozen foods, novelty wrappers, bundling and other applications where the film provides the required protection and the print can withstand converting, packing and distribution.
